Chris Johanson: Please Listen I Have Something to Tell You About What It Is

JOHANSON_chris_art.jpg For more than a decade, Chris Johanson has been transforming day-to-day subject matter into simple stories in paintings that make bright, flat reference to illustration or folk art: The New York Times called their look "a down-on-its-luck, cheerfully abject cartoon style reminiscent of artists like William Wegman, Raymond Pettibon and Sue Williams."

Psst! Pass It On.....

PSST.jpg Bran Dougherty-Johnson has been putting this together for two seasons. New films coming in March.

Psst! Pass it on... is a series of short animated films created in collaboration by a select group of motion graphics artists from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Berlin. Inspired by the Surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children's game of Telephone, the minute-long films consist of three sections by three different design teams. The artists worked sequentially, linking up their animations to create a single piece over the course of about 9 weeks. The films feature a variety of styles and methods of production including live-action, stop-motion, 3d & 2d animation.

Moyer Cycles | Fixed Gear Bicycles

fixed_gear.jpg Fixed gear bikes or track bikes have been making a resurgence. With stories on NPR and the NYtimes, Hipsters, and ad execs alike are all flocking to the frame shops. I just remember my old days in the early ninties at Alpenrose Velodrome. Which makes me want one like this from Moyer Cycles today. Also see the 1979 film that started it all Breaking Away starring Randy Quaid about the Indiana Little 500. More Pics Here on flickr.

Z Channel - Jerry Harvey

zchannel.gif The Z Channel was one of the first pay cable stations in the United States. Launched in 1974 from Los Angeles, California, this station was known for its devotion to the art of cinema due to the eclectic choice of films by the programming chief, Jerry Harvey. It also popularized the use of letterboxing on television, as well as showing 'director's cut' versions of films (which is a term popularized after Z Channel's showing of Heaven's Gate). Netflix it here.

Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering and Experimental Typography at MCAD

ALPHABET.png

Focusing on an ordinary subject that we see each day, often in the hundreds of thousands, Alphabet presents 26 letters as more than just shapes for conveying information. The 48 artists and designers in this show conceive and interpret the alphabet in surprising and inventive ways, ranging from graceful and polished to witty and unconventional. The 60 alphabets featured in Alphabet were created by artists in North America, Europe, and Asia, and represent work from well-known typographers and designers as well as rising artists and design students.
