I've posted about it before, but it's worth another mention: Art Space Tokyo is the definitive book on contemporary art in Tokyo. If you are ever planning on coming to Japan, you need this book. Even if you aren't, this book provides a singularly unique critical, social, and cultural perspective on art in Japan.
